Mitch Fatel is such a veteran stand-up comic that he has been cracking
wise professionally longer than his girlfriend has been alive. The
charismatic Fatel, who is in his mid-30s, has been a standup since he was
15. The diminutive Fatel's gal pal, Jenny Pynn, is 19.
While
catching Fatel's act, it's evident that the Hoboken-based performer
connects with youth onstage as well as off. That's why "Tonight Show" host
Jay Leno tabbed Fatel as a correspondent.
"Jay was looking for a way to attract younger viewers and he asked me to
work for him," Fatel said. "It's been great."
Fatel, who has appeared occasionally on the "Tonight Show," has scored
some serious face time on the popular show. "It's been incredible," Fatel
said. "It's not just due to the exposure, but I went to the Super Bowl for
them, and that's great since I'm a huge football fan."
Part of the allure of the stand-up life for Fatel is travel. As a result,
he's often away from the Garden State.
"The funny thing is that I have a lot of fans in New Jersey, and they
e-mail me and always ask when am I going to come back," Fatel said. "It's
funny since I play Atlantic City, but they ask when I'm coming to Jersey,
as in their part of Jersey."
Fatel returns to Central Jersey tomorrow night for a gig at The Comedy
Shoppe in the Sheraton at Woodbridge Place in Iselin.
"It's going to be fun coming in there since the people are great," Fatel
said. "They make for a great audience. I love Jersey."
While performing at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, Fatel met his
girlfriend, who was a waitress at the casino.
"There's nothing like going out with a 19-year-old," Fatel said. "All she
eats is chicken fingers. I can afford like 50 orders of chicken fingers a
day. Compared to her 19-year-old friends, I'm like Donald Trump. The other
day I let her order chicken fingers and mozzarella sticks and she almost
cried."
When the wacky Fatal performs tomorrow, expect him to reprise a number of
tracks from his latest disc "Super Retardo," which was released three
weeks ago. The first words out of his mouth will be his signature line,
"I'm Mitch Fatel and I'm very funny," Fatel said.
"The first time I went to a show and I was very young I thought it would
be funny for a comic to come out and say that, and I was right." |
